I stop and look around:
Work 47 of 440
Page 55. The journey continues: a voice tells him not to stop. Then a dreamlike encounter — bells in the distance, a familiar girl with snow on her head pretends to be a stranger, asks the way, then laughs and reveals herself: 'Am I not known to you?' He grabs her, they fly mile after mile until day dies. He makes the sleigh soft and she falls asleep covered in bear fur. This may be a vision, a memory, or an actual reunion during the escape.

I stop and look around:
already black the mountains, the road around,
and quiet all around.
And again I hear: don't stop!
Chase faster, don't be alone —
don't be alone.
XI
Bells ring somewhere far,
bells grow silent —
someone rides toward us
rides and turns back.
A familiar girl comes
snow on her head,
she wants to surprise us
unexpectedly.
She stops and asks the way,
pretending strange and cold,
raises her eyes to me,
shyly hidden.
Suddenly she bursts out laughing,
raises a hand,
uncovers her face and says:
— Am I not known to you?
I grab her to me
and the horse — a chase —
hey, we fly mile after mile
until the day dies.
XII
And the day dies and dark grows the road,
I make the sleigh soft from edge to edge —
my guest lies down, falls asleep quickly
covered from head to foot with bear fur.
