to watch that the proletarian-legions
shall not throw themselves at each other's faces.
And shall not, in outbreak of a brotherly brawl,
bloody the holiday path: —
because First of May is today — the holiday of brothers,
of solidarity and international songs,
the day of red flower and suffering-wonder, —
therefore, they say, they march separately! —

to prevent one from attacking the other! —
Because First of May, it seems, has become today
a day, when the weak unload from themselves the rage
on others just as weak, helpless as themselves,
on their own blood and their own bones! —
Because First of May, they say, is no longer the beautiful May,
it lies on all squares laid out like lead
and wails under the step of the marchers:
and knocks with grief in the knuckles of the leaders: —
Because hatred, instead of brotherhood, has settled
in heart of worker to worker, incited to death
through all days of the year. — therefore they march divided,
with accumulated contempt one for the other —
