Clouds melt in evening fire,
Work 297 of 440
Page 354. 'Ikh gib nisht nokh' conclusion: clouds melt in evening fire. Today he belongs to no one — 'tsu zikh aleyn zikh breng' (bring yourself to yourself). He storms over himself 'vi a vint iber a boym' (like wind over a tree). His longing lies 'hingerikhtet... oyf der sharf fun hek — sharf fun lider' (executed on the edge of axes — edge of songs). Days have made him 'raykher' (richer) with murder. 'Mayn lebn' (My Life): life spread like 'levone-shney' (moon-snow) over all ways, hanging on branches. Birds come at day's end, cry out and fall silent. Evening itself 'vi a guf' (like a body) stretches out beside him, intertwining arms, tearing songs from his lips. But he remains silent 'vi der boym un vi der shteyn' (like the tree and like the stone), no longer crying for happiness or the lost.
זײַנע פֿלאַמען פֿלעכטן זיך ווי שלאַנג;

Clouds melt in evening fire,
its flames braid like snakes;
I am today not yours, I am today not yours,
my command today: bring yourself to yourself alone.
I no longer come to myself tired,
I storm over myself like wind over a tree,
and on the edge of axes — edge of songs —
executed lies my longing for your home.
They say: there's no one equal to me in evil,
I accept, as always, the sting.
Oh, days, that with a murder made me richer,
oh days, oh my days, what more do you want? —
My Life
My life lies spread out, like moon-snow
over all ways,
and hangs on all branches.
And birds come with a cry
from the surrounding forest toward day's end,
and cry out and remain silent:
and remain sitting on all fences,
on all wires,
and lie down together with me.
A new blindingness lights up
over cooled-off lives,
when evening itself, like a body,
stretches out, beside me,
and begins to intertwine and tie
around me its arms,
and begins to tear from my lips
songs for happiness, for the lost:
— come back, happiness! —
Come, come.
But I am still, like all the drowsing birds,
and like the tree and like the stone
I cry no more for happiness or the lost.
