Page 355. 'In gortn fun khayes' (In the Garden of Animals): a crown of beauty on bare trees, caged animals, thorns. With 'gezang fun gelaytertn khoymer' (song of purified matter — Hebrew 'khoymer'), the speaker sows beauty. Winter around but 'freyd fun antplekter derkenung' (joy of revealed recognition) on them. The 'martirershaft fun finger' (martyrdom of fingers) — 'fun undzere taves di eybike tsoymer' (eternal bridlers of our desires — Hebrew 'taves') — torment themselves from hunger. Facing deer and tiger: 'di hirshn shvaygn, ober di tigers klogn' (the deer are silent, but the tigers lament). Tigers don't know 'dem sod vi iber zikh tsu zayn ziger' (the secret of being victorious over oneself — Hebrew 'sod'). The 'shoymer' (guardian — Hebrew) must be watchful with whip and 'kley-zayn' (weapons — Hebrew). The tigers of the heart spring up. Final command: 'shtil, tigers mayne, rut in di shtaygn' (quiet, my tigers, rest in the cages).

In the Garden of Animals
The crown of beauty on bare trees,
on animals in cages, on thorns:
I myself, with song of purified matter,
sow your beauty in yourself, as one sows seeds.
Winter around, and hail and rain,
but on us joy of revealed recognition,
we carry one toward the other
on frozen fingers a new closeness.
It's wonderful to see the martyrdom of fingers —
the eternal bridlers of our desires —
how they let themselves be tortured by their own hunger
and remain hanging frozen like branches on trees.
Oh person, friend, — why should
frozen arms need to remain hanging?
Let us bless the joy that our shadows cast,
so as to reach one another from afar.
Not easy are these words to say —
I stand here facing the deer and the tiger:
the deer are silent, but the tigers lament —
they don't know the secret of being victorious over oneself.
Crying wakes crying. Be watchful, my guardian,
stand ready with the whip, with weapons
over my own song of purified matter:
the tigers of my heart spring up, cry out.
Quiet, my tigers, rest in the cages,
also you, my deer, bow your horns:
the crown of beauty on bare branches,
on hail, on snow and on thorns.
