Page 177. 'The Wolf' Section B begins: Time has passed. Exiled Jews from other regions arrive and begin rebuilding — first the 'Cold Synagogue' (kalte shul), of which half the walls remained. They install the only Torah scroll they saved. They celebrate from maariv late into the night, but their joy is mixed with sorrow: no rabbi, and no one from the original settlement has returned. Suddenly they hear a strange distant weeping. When they listen — they hear truly, from far away, a long drawn-out howl of a beast penetrating the synagogue. First angry and growling 'as in a moment of rapture,' then thin and desperate 'like a dog tearing open its heart before the moon,' and finally quieter, whimpering, 'reminiscent of human weeping.' The wolf's cry reaches the new community — beast-sound that still carries human grief.

and began to rebuild the ruined houses,
and first of all — the Cold Synagogue,
because of the Cold Synagogue half the walls remained,
and because the number of new Jews was still small
they did not need more than one synagogue for now.
And when the synagogue was finished with windows and doors
they placed in the Holy Ark the Torah scroll,
the only Torah scroll, which they had rescued
and brought with them from their regions.
And they spent in the synagogue from maariv
until late in the night and celebrated.
And their joy was mixed with sorrow,
because they did not yet have their own rabbi,
and even greater was their sorrow,
that no Jew from the former settlement
had yet managed to return home.
And it happened, as they were celebrating —
they all suddenly remained trembling,
because it seemed to them that they heard
a distant strange weeping from somewhere.
And when they became silent and listened —
their terror grew even greater
because they heard in truth, as from far, far away
there reached and penetrated into the synagogue
a long drawn-out howling of a beast.
At first angry and growling, as in a moment of rapture,
and afterward thin and desperate, like the lament
of a dog that tears open its heart before the moon,
and at the end quieter and quieter and whimpering,
reminiscent of the weeping of a human.
