And here, in your America's houses,
snacking over a glass of wine,
O'Neill and Dreiser laugh at you,
and should be your teachers after all.
They seek in you the Shylock
and pinch themselves in Yankee cheek,
and there they shout: Hitler holy!
heil, heil, maniac!
It moves, it comes the cloud,
a dark one, like a mourner's sack,
the world makes a bloody merchandise
for the rising-to-greatness maniac.
On the Day of Redemption
On the day of redemption the folk danced,
but one in the celebration did not dance —
the Golem.
In the evening at the feast the folk waited —
the place of honor should take his seat of honor
the Golem.
Waited, — and the dancing not stopped. —
— don't interrupt the joy, said in the morning
the Golem.
The folk waits an hour, and two, and three,
and still doesn't take his seat of honor
the Golem.
The folk looks, and sees suddenly:
disappeared as if from under the hands
the Golem.
The folk sets off with dances across town,
and searches; — but nowhere can be found
the Golem.
And suddenly, — from somewhere a weeping reaches.
and all recognize in the voice, that it weeps
the Golem.
The folk gives a shudder. and here — it sees:
in an empty prison sits in loneliness and weeps
the Golem.
The dance tears itself off. — "don't destroy the joy,
don't tear the dance" — pleads with quiet weeping
the Golem.
"Even stronger in dance and stronger in joy,
since you hear now how weeps its weeping
the Golem." —
— "We hear your weeping, but tell us, why?" —
— "To sing your joy" — said in weeping
the Golem.
— "Come, sit at the head." — "First promise me
no more to cut short the celebration" — says with weeping
the Golem.
— "We promise you" — answered the folk. —
— "Then I will now bless you" — said with weeping
the Golem.
The folk goes back to the feast,
and ahead with raised hands goes and blesses
the Golem.
The celebration blazes, bands and dances.
and high at the head sits in loneliness and weeps
the Golem.
