English Translation

The Song of a Thousand Windows

The song of a thousand nights, of a thousand windows: —

it always seems to me — I'm just beginning;

I feel the fresh light of beginning, belief,

the flutter of a first holiday flag.

Have I ever seen such stars?

have I ever heard such a cry,

that now lets itself be heard to me

through walls of transparent moonlight? —

The song of bread — song of ripe stalks.

the song of death — song of ripe days. —

the song of the worker, who went

an honest, a brave one on his pure path.

Went and stumbled, and fell —

called with a terrifying voice: help!

who answered him? — howling of jackals

and wailing of hungry wolves.

The wailing he took into his heart,

rose for the further walk,

and began to meet him

the slave, the prisoner and the poor man.

And all gave one outcry

such a cry from deep lungs:

we want to live, live, live —

and the cry brought them to the high house.

To the high house on Colorado lanes

surrounded by Mount Evans and Pikes Peak,

now they lie, — they can no longer walk,

but sing — they still sing of sun and happiness.

I sing with them in chorus, seized by belief

in the chorus of worker, of prisoner and servant;

I sing with them the song of a thousand windows,

I sing with them the song of a thousand nights.
