Work 404 of 440

Page 472. Continuation of 'Zay greyt, Daniyel': yesterday's friend 'flikt pasn' (strips badges), 'shendet' (shames) word, blood, class, folk, race. Says 'vi elohim: es iz gut' (like God: it is good — Genesis refrain). Will betray at battle's moment, even own father. Yesterday buried silent. Mothers rock new sons for coming war. Addressed as Jewish, 18 from cradle, can lead brigade and fall first. Name hidden — 'nit fun arier-shtom' (not from Aryan stock). Carries ancient fate, 'oygn fun a Yitskhok-lam' (eyes of Isaac-lamb — Akedah reference). 'Khayishe sin'e' (bestial hatred — Hebrew 'sin'ah') spreads 'vi a rak' (like cancer). Maniac strides with 'go'elsher mine' (redeemer's expression — Hebrew 'go'el'). Intellectuals and artists 'gisn zol-bungen' (pour praise-wishes). 'Hauptman' — Gerhart Hauptmann (1862-1946), German playwright of 'Die Weber' (The Weavers, 1892), social drama about Silesian weavers' revolt, became 'khanifener fun natsishn got' (flatterer of Nazi god — Hebrew 'chanifa'). Sharp critique of German intellectuals' collaboration.

English Translation

The yesterday's friend strips badges

from everything, shames word, shames blood,

shames class, shames folk and race,

and says, like God: it is good.

You too the friend will betray

when the moment of battle comes;

he betrays his own father

for across the world strides the maniac.

Yesterday lies dead already silenced.

they bury the fallen one: lie!

mothers sit again and rock

new sons for the coming war.

You are certainly Jewish,

you're eighteen years from the cradle!

you can already lead a whole brigade

and fall first in war.

And your name will be hidden

because you don't descend from Aryan stock,

you carry an ancient fate upon you

and have eyes of an Isaac-lamb.

Over hearts the bestial hatred

has spread like a cancer;

over countries with a redeemer's expression

strides, strides the maniac.

And the clever ones — the people of knowledge

and the beautiful ones — the people of song,

pour on his head with praise-wishes,

strew his path with flowers.

See, Hauptmann — the poet of 'The Weavers' —

do you understand, my son, such mockery? —

has become a giver of honor,

a flatterer of the Nazi god.
