In Sullivan County
1
The first bright hour today after the rain,
the sun shines on me soft and mild,
the fields of Sullivan County's valleys
stretch far around the narrow road,
there somewhere the forests blue on mountains,
with meadows the fields are fenced...
to refresh with this is not yet easy,
the sap falls straight into an enchanted ring
of outstretched green, prickly hands
and branches interwoven, thorny walls.
but meadows are so plentiful after the rain,
the sun still shines on me soft and mild,
fresh milk already waits, but I'm in no hurry to go to the farm
and always stretching, my arm breaks the twigs.
2
Yellow, red mosaic of fields,
framed in borders of forests,
here and there a lonely tree,
One can barely see the mountains,
hemmed as if by a world of trees.
A mist has veiled the mountains.
3
The mountain has concealed a grey softness...
No mountain — this is better,
the distance becomes farther, greater,
in the soft distances
my soul wanders lightly.
in the white distances
it becomes soft and bright.
In a soft vastness the whole world swims.
No world — this is better...
my eye becomes softer, larger,
in the soft vastness
there's no world, no earth.
In the soft vastness
I swim undisturbed.
4
He and She
He is a trunk,
she — the green leaves on the trunk,
from him to her stretch
dark forces, strong, fruitful saps,
she trembles with every stir of wind
and whispers and laughs
and silvers herself,
like eyes on a happy face;
He is a simpleton, a mute.
Autumn paints her in magnificent colors,
The cold wind drives her away from the trunk,
And he remains standing a simpleton,
A strong one, a mute one.
5
From The Mountain
I climbed up the mountain and saw:
Fields, like golden rivers,
and trees on them, like sails on ships,
green sails on golden rivers.
And at night, it's an abyss, green and deep
the road, like a pink snake,
all around green sails from ships,
like a forest, without number.
How insignificant, how small was my valley,
my green valley:
It carried itself, as if on wings of wind,
from there a wailing sound
my little child called me there;
but I was nailed to the mountain,
and long did the wind rustle and howl,
and long did the child cry and call,
until the valley heard my steps.
6
The Mosquito
I would have died
maybe tonight,
if not for the tiny mosquito.
It bites me, bites
and torments me with fear
and doesn't want to leave me,
and hums so quietly and thinly
and comforts,
so I'm not alone yet in the world,
and it won't leave me in need,
when the night is more terrible than death.
