ווי רירנדיק איז אַ פעלד

,מיט עופה'לעך שפּראָצונגען

,צווישן שטיינער און צעטריקנטער ערד

ווי דורשטיקע אָפענע מײלעכלעך

.קוקן זיי צום הימל

אויסגעוואַשן ליכטיק העל

שמייכלען זיי אויף הויפנס פייכטער ערד

,נאָך אַ רעגן

.ווי קינדערלעך אויף שוואַרצע בריסט

,ניט דרײסט, נאָר אומפאַרמײדלעך

זיי טיילן אָפּ די קעפּעלעך פון דער שוואַרצער ערד

,און ציען זיך צו דער זון, צו ליבע

,פאַרגעסן אָן דער מוטער

ביז דעם שניטערס מעסער

.בײגט ניט אײן צוריק זיי צו דער ערד

Tsvishn Shteyner un tsetriknter Erd,

Vi durshtike ofene Maylekhlekh

Kukn zey tsum Himl.

Oysgegosn likhtik hel

Shmeykhlen zey oyf Hoyfns faykhter Erd

Nor a Regn,

Vi Kinderlekh oyf shvartse Brist.

Nit dreyst, nor umfarmaydlekh

Tseyln zey op di Kepelekh fun der shvartser Erd

Un tsien zikh tsu der Zun, tsu Libe,

Fargesn az di Muter,

Biz dem Shniter's Meser

Beygt zey ayn tsurik tsu der Erd.

English Translation

A Field

How moving is a field

with sprouts like fledglings,

between stones and dried earth,

like thirsty open little mouths

they look to the sky.

Poured out bright and clear

they smile on heaps of moist earth

just after rain,

like little children on black breasts.

Not boldly, but unfalteringly

they unfurl their little heads from the black earth

and stretch towards the sun, towards love,

forgetting about their mother,

until the reaper's knife

bends them back to the earth.
