English Translation

I Sing To You

You did not sow a child in me,

just sowed yourself instead, —

you grow now within me, with each day

ever clearer, ever larger.

for myself there's no more room left in me,

and my lies, like a dog at its master's feet,

and grows ever weaker, weaker,

yet dying through you,

I sing to you, like before, serenades..

The word English cannot carry

and my soul lies, like a dog at its master's feet,

neshome

Neshome is the Hebrew-derived divine soul, the breath of life — weightier and more sacred than English "soul." In warm speech it also names a beloved person outright.
