What are the beats of drums and cannons

Work 426 of 440

Page 504. Continuation of 'Di balade fun Denver sanatorium': contrast between drums/cannons and 'tsvey mide hent' (two tired hands), banners and trembling collar. 'Nikhnadiker' = submissive (Hebrew 'nikhna'). The glass of milk Nathan missed drinking - symbolic of life unlived. 'Oyfgekroyzete hor' = curly hair. Repetition of 'fuftsin yor' (15 years) - the defining fact of Nathan's life. Leivick refuses biographical detail ('yingele-yorn' = boyhood years) because the 15 years of illness says everything. The 'Denverer shpitol' = Denver hospital (J.C.R.S. sanatorium). The world outside ('oyf yener zayt fun shvel un shtign') went through countless events while Nathan lay bedridden.

English Translation

What are the beats of drums and cannons

against the echo of two tired hands? --

and the flutter-blindness of waving banners

against the trembling of a shirt's collar?

By the patient's bed a submissive one stands

a silent one, like the last grass in the field --

he stands guilty, wound up tight,

who can barely hold a glass in his hand.

The glass of milk, which Neuman Nathan

missed drinking before he went;

the little glass -- not a drop spilled --

dissolves into nothing now by itself.

But Nathan Neuman -- who then is Neuman?

why don't I tell you what and who --

well yes -- he will not return anyway

he will not return anymore anyway.

Well yes a person so, a Nathan Neuman,

a dear youth with curly hair --

at sixteen years he came here

and lay bedridden in hospital fifteen years.

I could tell you things

about his boyhood years -- but, why,

nothing will make him as clear

as that he lay bedridden fifteen years.

I could paint for you his thin body

and also his clever face, but it becomes clear to you

his appearance only from repeating

that he lay bedridden a full fifteen years.

And in those fifteen years of such lying

in a little room of Denver hospital --

the world, on that side of threshold and stairs,

went through such a number of events,
