English Translation

Two Children

Two children walk across a field.

Barefoot they walk — sister and brother.

July sun ignites the world with fire,

pours fire also on childish limbs.

Brother — the older one — bony, thin, —

sister — a crumb — with silver locks;

the older leads the child by the hand,

looks ahead with frightened eyes.

Far from home wandered off, it seems,

or completely homeless, fleeing from beatings; —

eyes of brother, that look ahead,

sink down flooded with tears.

Nothing with them, — no water, no bread, —

dry are the prickly lanes;

barefoot feet, — beaten red, —

evidence of long, many-days walking.

Brother is silent mute, and the little sister — too.

wise is the child with the silver locks,

raises the eyes, tears up to the height,

looks with a look of a wise old man.

Becomes stirred up in a rise of courage

the older brother, — begins eagerly to hurry,

to fly through he wants with miracle of the minute

the evil blazing heart of the miles.

He walks and clutches the little sister's hand,

little sister hastily runs along and dances under;

also the sun chases to the far-farthest edge,

beats with her along, until it descends down.

On little sister's lips rises such foam,

little sister's feet suddenly begin to sink,

west-side sky — a bloody hem —

edged forests to the ground begins to drown.

The older is silent, and the little sister — too,

equal stubbornness in the hearts of both;

the older, suddenly, choked as in smoke,

wants to begin to whisper, to speak.

Before the older opens his mouth, —

little sister's eyes close with sleep.

little sister curls up like a ball, —

the older falls to her and begins to kneel.

Little sister sleeps, and the brother guards her,

strokes with his fingers the silver locks;

sees: — also the moon descends and kneels,

hears: — all stars ring like bells.

The older takes the child in his hands,

presses her to himself face to face,

starts walking further, blinded in white,

under the bright full moon.

Walks as in spell, in impetus burning,

above him the bells rock stronger;

carries in hands pressed together

bloody little feet and silver locks.

Little Boy

Night and fireflies.

a twisted path;

I seek for them a melody,

I seek for them a language.

All words gape

at the slightest saying, —

the world is just created,

the world is one day old.

Echo of a storm,

Milky Way turns crooked, —

smell of God's form

still carries around.
