Just emerged from abysses

Work 394 of 440

Page 461. Continuation of 'Yingl': 'ersht aroys fun tehumen' (just emerged from abysses — Hebrew 'tehom'). Toward 'zin... tsil' (son... goal). Everything still a 'nomen' (name), 'shmeykhel, sod un shpil' (smile, secret, play — Hebrew 'sod'). Moon as 'shpiltsayg-klingl' (toy-bell). 'Got aleyn — a yingl' (God himself — a boy). Moon reflects old head in 'brunem' (well). 'Groyer kop fun zokn oyf yunger erd' (grey head of old man on young earth — Hebrew 'zaken'). Night, fireflies, melody rises. New poem 'Unter di fliglen' (Under the Wings): under another's suffering finds 'shuts' (shelter). Passes 'land fun freydn' (land of joy) to reach 'land fun guts' (land of good). 'Hakhno'e' (humility — Hebrew 'hachna'a'). Who drove himself out will go to 'goles' (exile — Hebrew 'galut') again. Song is 'tseykhn oyfn zamd' (mark on sand) — no 'shoyb' (windowpane), no 'shotn' (shadow) under roof. Homelessness and wandering imagery.

English Translation

Just emerged from abysses

toward a son, a goal, —

everything is still a name, —

smile, secret and play.

Moon — a toy-bell —

appears and disappears;

God himself — a little boy,

plays like a child.

Looks strange to me,

suddenly, when my head

deep as in a well

the moon reflects.

I stand, gape frightened;

see how comes here

a grey head of an old man

on a young earth? —

Night and fireflies,

a twisted path;

here rises the melody, —

listen, be awake, be awake.

Under the Wings

Under the wings of another's suffering

I find shelter for my own;

I pass by the land of joy,

in order to come to the land of good.

With song of pure love,

in humility at a threshold to stand;

whoever once drove himself out —

will go into exile more than once.

My song — a mark on the sand,

on the sand of a wild path;

one sees no windowpane to reach,

no shadow from under a roof.
