אַ שטיבל אַ קלײנס און אַ נידעריקס
אין ווײַטן געפֿרוירענעם לאַנד,
אין שטיבל צוויי מענטשן דערשראָקענע,
זיי זיצן און וואַרטן געשפּאַנט.
און אײנע אַ פֿרוי אַ געווינערין
גײט אויס פֿון געשריי צו געשריי:
ווערט רואיק און שטיל די געווינערין —
פֿאַרברעכן די פֿינגער די צווײ.
זײַן דרויסן — אַ שניי און אַ פֿינצטערניש,
אַ שטילער אַ נאָגנדער ווינט,
דורך טרויער מוז קומען, דורך ווײטיקן
דאָס נײַע דערוואַרטעטע קינד.
עס האָבן די ווײַזערס פֿון זײגער נאָך
די העכסטע מינוט ניט דערגרײכט:
עס האָט נאָך די מוטער איר אָטעמצוג
דעם לעצטן נאָך ניט אויסגעהויכט.
און פּלוצלונג צעזײט זיך די פֿינצטערניש,
אַ קלאָרער באַווײַזט זיך דער שנײ,
אין שטיבל צוויי מענטשן דערשראָקענע
דערהערן אַ קינדיש געשריי.
אין אַ זײַדן העמדל
אין אַ זײַדן העמדל
איז דאָס קינד געבוירן.
איז דאָס זײַדן העמדל
שוין צעפֿליקט געוואָרן.
פֿרעמדע הענט אים באָדן,
פֿרעמדע בריסט אים זויגן,
טונקעלער און קאַלטער
ווערן זײַנע אויגן.

A shtibl a kleyns un a nideriks
in vaytn gefroirenem land,
in shtibl tsvey mentshn dershrokene,
zey zitsn un vartn geshpant.
Un eyne a froy a gevinerin
geyt oys fun geshrey tsu geshrey:
vert ruik un shtil di gevinerin —
farbrekhn di finger di tsvey.
Zayn droysn — a shney un a fintsternish,
a shtiler a nogndiker vint,
dorkh troyer muz kumen, dorkh veytikn
dos naye dervartete kind.
Es hobn di vayzers fun zeyger nokh
di hekhste minut nit dergreykht:
es hot nokh di muter ir otemtsug
dem letstn nokh nit oysgehoykht.
Un plutslung tsezeyt zikh di fintsternish,
a klorer bavayzt zikh der shney,
in shtibl tsvey mentshn dershrokene
derhern a kindish geshrey.

iz dos kind geboyrn.
Iz dos zaydn hemdl
shoyn tsefliket gevorn.
Fremde hent im bodn,
fremde brist im zoygn,
tunkeler un kalter
vern zayne oygn.
In a Little House
A little house, small and low
in the far frozen land,
in the house two people frightened,
they sit and wait, tense.
And one, a woman in labor,
goes from cry to cry:
becomes quiet and still the woman —
the two wring their fingers.
Outside — snow and darkness,
a still, gnawing wind,
through sorrow must come, through pain
the new awaited child.
The hands of the clock have not yet
reached the highest minute:
the mother has not yet
breathed out her final breath.
And suddenly the darkness parts,
clearer shows the snow,
in the house two people frightened
hear a childish cry.
In a Silk Shirt
In a silk shirt
was the child born.
Is the silk shirt
already torn apart.
Strange hands bathe him,
strange breasts nurse him,
darker and colder
become his eyes.
