Page 372. 'Ikh veys' (I Know): the refrain 'ikh veys, ikh veys, ikh veys' frames dark knowledge. 'Der mentsh iz a volf, a tiger' (man is wolf, tiger) — the victor bathes 'in dem bazigṭns blut un shveys' (in the defeated one's blood and sweat). Sweet words become 'vi gal biter' (bitter as gall). He knows how a beaten body looks, kicked 'in a shtayg' (into a cage). 'Di simkhe fun vundiker iz greser' (the joy of the wounder is greater). Eternal is the 'gemeyner bund fun tfise-shlislen mit di shleser' (base covenant of prison-keys with locks — Hebrew 'tfise'). BUT: he also knows 'a mames shoys oyf toyte shney-ike stepes' (a mother's lap on dead snowy steppes — from his Siberian exile). A wolfish lament becomes 'gliklekher himn' (joyful hymn). Even 'elender gefaynikter guf' (wretched tortured body) wells with 'bafrukhtperndikn zomen' (fertilizing seed). Finally: stretched on naked earth, surrounded by worms, the person hears 'dos tsapl fun a kind in zayne gederim' (the quivering of a child in his bowels) — life persists.
Ikh veys

un yomer vert gliklekher himn

oyf lipn in heylikung fun a nomen.
Oysgeshtrekṭ oyf naketer erd,
arumgeringlt mit nakht un verim: —
ligt der mentsh un hert
dos tsapl fun a kind in zayne gederim.
I Know
I know, I know, I know —
man is a wolf, a tiger:
in the defeated one's blood and sweat
the victor loves to bathe.
And soft sweet words
become bitter as gall:
when one brings joy to another
a third sets himself against.
I know, I know, I know,
how a beaten body looks,
and how a foot kicks the body
into a cage to lock with a lock.
And however great is the weeping of the wound —
the joy of the wounder is greater:
eternal is the base covenant
of prison-keys with the locks.
I know, I know, I know —
but I also know something else:
I myself have felt a mother's lap
on dead snowy steppes.
A person with wolfish voice
laments to blind distances
and lament becomes joyful hymn
of one comforted, one freed.
A wretched tortured body
wells with fertilizing seed,
and sweet foam rises
on lips in sanctification of a name.
Stretched out on naked earth,
surrounded by night and worms: —
lies the person and hears
the quivering of a child in his bowels.
