Page 369. 'Ru in shturemvint' conclusion: like white snow belonging to the world, the storm rests, stars burn on his brows till dawn. 'A grus' (A Greeting): a bright white day, snow burning on 'bergike kep' (mountaintops), paths open, stairs 'rufn briderlekh' (call brotherly). He is 'a gast... bay mayn eygn lebn' (a guest at my own life) — bringing joy as gift, giving 'mayne shtume lipn tsu zun un nakht' (my silent lips to sun and night). He wants to say a word about 'mayn vaytn fraynt' (my distant friend). But 'dos glik, vos vert tseteylt nor tsvishn tsveyen' (happiness divided only between two) may not deserve the name. The day lifts 'dem levonedikn bekher' (the moonish goblet — Hebrew 'levone') foaming with 'nit-farmaydlekhn mazl' (unavoidable fortune — Hebrew 'mazl'). 'Vi far a nes' (as for a miracle — Hebrew 'nes'), his glances light up; happy to send greetings 'tsu dir un — durkh dir — tsu der velt' (to you and — through you — to the world).

And like white snow belonging to the whole world, —
come you and flutter up to lift and take me:
the storm rests, and upright stars
burn till dawn upon my brows.
A Greeting
The day today is bright, white,
the snow burns on the mountaintops,
the paths to all houses lie open,
and all stairs call brotherly to themselves.
I am a guest today at my own life —
this time I have brought joy as a gift:
I have come to love, I have come to give
my silent lips to sun and night.
It is somehow strange for me to carry such joy,
I stop at every threshold, at every door,
and want to say something, say, say
such a word about my distant friend — about you.
About you such a word, that should gladden
the heart of everyone, everyone on earth:
the happiness, that is divided only between two,
is perhaps not worthy to bear the name happiness.
The day climbs up the mountains ever higher,
and reaches the edge on the other side,
and lifts up the moonish goblet
in its outstretched evening hand.
The goblet foams and foams over
with unavoidable fortune, a new snow
begins to fall — covering all paths and houses
and also me — with my open face toward them.
As for a miracle my glances light up,
and I am happy, that I have not missed
a greeting to receive, and a greeting to send
to you and — through you — to the world.
