Your guarded form belongs to all now,
let everyone carry it with joy; —
but here is life today so unprotected
and joy passes into lamentation.
I speak often to myself, I ask: where
does man go, where will he arrive; —
the tumult becomes still, becomes thin, thin, thin,
until the tongue sticks to the palate.
I too become mute, my dear friend,
let another begin to sing;
between yesterday and tomorrow — tormented today
