A Ruin

Work 38 of 440

Page 46. 'A khurve' (A Ruin) is a poem of exhausted wandering: no footsteps will cheer them, their own will be blown away by the wind; somewhere a ruin waits in the steppes with doors and windows open, where they will fall and sleep. 'In der fintster' (In the Darkness) describes the torment of not being able to sleep: extinguished logs, dying coals, wishing for a childish story to make eyelids close, but one can neither sleep nor wake, stretch out nor sit, cry without tears. Finally sinking into darkness without even a spark.

English Translation

A Ruin

At night no foreign

footsteps will cheer us

and ours — the wind

will blow away, disperse.

And we will come

to drag ourselves somewhere

a ruin somewhere stands

abandoned in the steppes.

It stands and waits for us

the doors, windows open —

we will fall down

and sleep, sleep, sleep.

In the Darkness

Extinguished logs lie,

single coals still glow:

how good if someone could

tell something childish.

Something such, that my eyelids

would close by themselves —

barely dragging yourself to rest,

you can neither sleep nor wake.

You stretch out — you want to sit:

you sit — you want to lie:

quietly in the night you would cry —

no tear comes to the eyes.

You throw yourself around —

you sink into the darkness.

No logs lie anymore,

no sparks glow anymore.
