English Translation

To My Close Ones

I have exchanged your sunny shore

For this uncertain .

A bad limb has been cut off from you

And hurled into the sea.

And blissful you have remained

On your sunny shore,

Only in have you gathered pearls

And searched for my footsteps on the shore.

And I, your bad limb,

Carry myself across the sea.

Will I find a among the pearls? --

Among the pearls in the of the sea.

The word English cannot carry

For this uncertain sea.

yam

Yam is the Hebrew-derived "sea," echoing scripture — the Yam Suf that split for the Exodus. Against exile and drowning it sounds a biblical note the neutral English "sea" cannot.
