English Translation

Rose-colored Threads

When a restlessness steals into my heart in my home,

and I find no place in my house,

then, I take out from somewhere

a white, a child's dress

with rose-colored threads half embroidered

and the rose-colored threads weave with my ,

I sit and I sew and count my stitches

and I ask in the silence of house:

ah, my frightening restlessness

where do you hide, where?

When I hold in my hands this child's dress

With rose-colored threads half embroidered

rose-colored threads frighten you, like sunshine a mouse,

suddenly it becomes calm in my heart in my house!

The word English cannot carry

and the rose-colored threads weave with silence my soul,

shvaygn

Shvaygn is silence as a chosen act — a keeping-quiet, a withholding — not the mere absence of sound. A beloved’s shvaygn is something done to the speaker.
