.איך ליג אין האַמאַק

,דורך צווייגן שיינט הייס אַריין די זון

,איך פאַרמאַך מיינע אויגן

און זע אַ בלויע כינעזישן שריפט

;אויף אַ גילדענעם בלאַט

ליכטיק בלויע כינעזישע אותיות

,פינקלען אַרויף און אַראָפּ

ווי קליינע פאַנטאַסטישע פענצטער

.אויף אַ וואַנט פון אַ גילדענעם טורעם

,איך פאַרשטיי ניט די שריפט

:נאָר עפּעס פאַרדריקט מיין האַרץ

,איך ליב דיך, איך ליב דיך

.אַזוי לעז איך די בלויע כינעזישע שריפט

Transliteration

In Hamak

Ikh lig in Hamak.

Durkh Tsvaygn shaynt heys arayn di Zun,

Ikh farmakh mayne Oygn,

Un ze a bloye khinezishe Shrift

Oyf a gildenem Blat;

Likhtik bloye khinezishe Oysyes

Finklen aroyf un arop,

Vi kleyne fantastishe Fentster

Oyf a Vant fun a gildenem Turem.

Ikh farshtey nit di Shrift,

Nor epes fardrikt mayn Harts:

Ikh lib dikh, ikh lib dikh,

Azoy lez ikh di bloye khinezishe Shrift.

English Translation

In the Hammock

I lie in the hammock.

Through branches the hot sun shines in,

I close my eyes,

and see a blue Chinese script

on a golden leaf;

bright blue Chinese letters

flicker up and down,

like small fantastic windows

on a wall of a golden tower.

I don't understand the script,

but something squeezes my heart:

I love you, I love you,

that's what the blue Chinese script says.
