Di Luft iz eng un shver gevorn,

In a Tunklkeyt a bloyer.

Es kukn vild un heys azoy

Dem Himls groye Blikn;

A blaykher Poyzet unter zey

Der Roykh fun di Fabrikn.

Fun volkndike Brikn.

Ot zenen shoyn di Brikn, Shpaltn,

Ot flien gikher zikh bahaltn

Tsvey Taybelekh fun Regn.

English Translation

Before the Storm

The air has become tight and heavy,

the sky lower, grayer;

shadows have lost themselves

in a darkness that's blue.

It looks wild and beastly out

the sky's grey gaze;

a pale dawn under it

the smoke from the factories.

It is, like white foam in the

the smoke from the factories —

In dark green, heavy border

of cloudy bridges.

There are already the bridges, cracks,

white fiery days;

there they fly faster to hide themselves

two little doves from rain.

The word English cannot carry

It is, like white foam in the sea

yam

Yam is the Hebrew-derived "sea," echoing scripture — the Yam Suf that split for the Exodus. Against exile and drowning it sounds a biblical note the neutral English "sea" cannot.
