At Night on the "Excursion Train"
1.
Couples in love with cigars, cigarettes,
peanuts, ice cream and coffee;
a dark lava of people,
lowered vignettes,
scent of young body and sweat,
eyes flash scattered and hot.
It thunders with laughter.
Cards are laid out on laps,
touch of feet and knees.
Sweet is the train's thrust.
Eyes, hearts, words glow.
2.
Hoo-ha-ha-hoorah and whistle —
The hour has grown ripe.
Ah, the midnight hour of vigils,
when you hear the demons laugh,
when you hear the demons sing...
A harmonica here!
Ah, my gruesome desire!
You, my black, wild swan
spread your wings upon the train.
3.
Not standing, not flying
in a train rushing past,
like a terror by night,
here — and gone.
4.
The train sways to the rhythm of dance,
where two male feet carve out
with so much feeling
on the stone-paved floor.
It smells of gin,
and the floor shakes,
like a piece of gelatin.
But the feet carve hard
the syllables of dance,
until the floor becomes a sea,
where we all swim in burning revelry.
5.
The train sings a song:
I am tired, tired, tired — — — —
All at once everyone is tired.
Heads fall onto shoulders, onto walls,
hands intertwine with hands,
a leg presses sharply against a leg,
ah, bless you, hour of dark pleasure!
All at once it gets black in the train,
the light has at all at once gone out,
a black swan has flown in
and all at once extinguished the light,
the light flared back up in a flash,
and joy vanished again,
and the burden of light fell upon everyone,
like a heavy weight.
6.
Sleep has rocked the jazz to rest.
Sleep has lulled the jazz to sweetness.
Now the jazz lies pressed down
together with the little harmonica
and the train sings alone its lullaby.
7.
It jolts, it thrusts in tired momentum,
the dragon drags itself further.
Everything awakens from a short slumber,
there's tumult again in the wagon.
Dance, dance, fields,
run faster past my gaze,
here and gone, the joy —
on the autumn fields
the dear old grass,
on the autumn fields
from morning rose.
