Poem 88 of 95 · In the Hot Wind
Baynakht
At Night

An umetiker Shoymer.
At Night
At night, barely, barely the trees move
with their pointed branches,
as if afraid of disturbing the secrets of the night,
at night the trees are silent, silent
under the distant gaze of the stars.
I too become quiet at night,
even quieter than the trees,
it seems to me that over my soul watches
a melancholy guardian.

The word English cannot carry
it seems to me that over my soul watches
neshome
Neshome is the Hebrew-derived divine soul, the breath of life — weightier and more sacred than English "soul." In warm speech it also names a beloved person outright.
