An Evening in March
Poem 56 of 95
An Ovnt in Merts
Du kenst shoyn nit farshteyn mer
azelkhe vunderlekhe Zakhn,
vi a naser Oyfdernakht in Merts,
ven es tsitern nokh blaykh
di ersht getsundene Lomtern
un shpiglen zikh in freylekhn Asfalt...
Fun Libe trakhstu nor, fun Libe,
Akh, du aleyn nor geyst arum a Blaykhe,
a groyer Shotn in lustikn Farnakht,
nokh alts in vinterdikn Hut un Mantl;
An Evening in March
You can no longer understand
such wonderful things,
like a wet nightfall in March,
when still pale trembling
the just-lit lanterns
and mirror themselves in joyful asphalt...
Of love you think only, of love,
you foolish, you unhappy woman!
Lift up your sorrowful head and see,
how the "El" weaves its black net,
and women go there up, down
with eyes bright like spring clouds,
with painted lips, cheeks,
like final traces of sunset.
Ah, you alone still walk around pale,
a gray shadow in the merry dusk,
still in winter hat and coat;
and the large eyes reveal the secret,
and of love you think only, of love,
you foolish, you unhappy woman!
