Page 203. 'Di Shtal' Sections YZ and YKh — the fugitive's prayer and the starlight: Section YZ: The younger brother's prayer/blessing to the hidden stars and moon: 'May the white light that should have shone from you to shine into me — may that white light which for the first time from the beginning of night had to not rise over me — may it find its rest, and may it be forgiven.' Through the darkness he hears the 'song-weeping' of the stars, sees their mourning. 'I raise myself to you and come to you — to forgive you. Forgive you.' Mutual forgiveness between the fugitive and the celestial lights that hid. Section YKh: Forest on both sides, murmur of river ahead, the round tower of the stable visible above all roofs. Now the hidden stars and moon begin to shine, wandering over roads, searching rays scraping over stones, sand, grass, winding through trees, climbing back to the tower, sliding down to the river, piercing in 'half in water, half out — like two-edged shadowed slaughter knives' — until 'longing and purified' they fall onto the open face of the fugitive. The khalofim image returns, transformed — now light-rays like knives bringing purification, not death.

שלענגלען זיך דורך אַלע ביימער פֿון די וועלדער;

May the white light, that should have
shone from you, so as to shine into me,
may the white light, that had to
for the first time from the beginning of night
not rise over me and not shine in:
may the white light find its rest,
and may it be forgiven.
Through the spread darkness, that is over me,
I hear the song-weeping from you,
I see your mourning, that you mourn,
through the spread darkness, that is over me,
I raise myself to you and come to you
to forgive you. Forgive you.
YKh
On both sides of the hillock — forest and forest.
Ahead — a restrained murmur of a river.
And on the other side of the river,
higher than all roofs —
the round tower of the stable.
The unshone stars and moon
begin to shine forth.
Over all roads they let themselves wander.
Over all stones, sand and grasses
the searching rays scrape,
wind through all trees of the forests;
climb back up to the round tower
and slide from there down to the cold spread of the river,
pierce in
half in water, half out of water,
like two-edged shadowed slaughtering knives —
until they fall, longing and purified,
onto the open face of the fugitive.
