What shall become
Work 401 of 440
Page 468. Continuation of 'Nevermore': what becomes of 'nakht vos ligt tserisn' (night lying torn) like battlefield after battle? Not new — 'Edgar Po' already 'oysgefubert' (fevered out) such an hour. Through 'vaysn kholem' (white dream — Hebrew 'chalom') and nearer reality — echoes 'urteyl' (verdict): 'Nevermore' (English). New poem 'Nakht getreye' (Night Faithful), dedicated to 'B. Vladek' — Baruch Charney Vladeck (1886–1938), Jewish labor leader and editor. 'Rizn-shotns' (giant shadows), head reaches to forest. Evening 'veyt mit heysn otem' (blows with hot breath). 'Umru' (unrest) chases. Path to forest — speaker stops 'fargafter' (gaping, terrified). From forest 'rayter' (rider) comes, 'shnaydt di erd in vilde klafter' (cuts earth in wild fathoms). Horse with 'fis vi shpizn' (legs like spears). Stabs through 'shotn-rizn' (shadow-giants). 'Impet' (impetus — Latin). Rider disappears. Earth and speaker 'blaybn dule' (remain dizzy). 'Tifer vinter nemt durkh dos harts fun heysn yuli' (deep winter through heart of hot July). Vision of apocalyptic horseman.

Iz vos zol vern

What shall become
of such a night,
that lies torn apart,
like a battlefield after a battle?
It's nothing new —
already Edgar Poe
has fevered out
such an outlandish hour.
Through white dream
and nearer reality —
echoes the verdict,
the old verdict: Nevermore.
Night Faithful
(B. Vladek)
Among giant-shadows — my own shadow,
the head reaches all the way to the forest;
the evening blows with hot breath,
and unrest chases from all heights.
The path to the forest — I don't walk further.
I suddenly stop, terrified, gaping;
from deep in the forest a rider chases toward
and cuts the earth in wild fathoms.
He chases, and the horse, with legs like spears,
stabs through the field, tears open ditches,
he also stabs through the shadow-giants,
he tears them open, and dances across.
Whistle of wind, flapping, jingling;
where he chases — only he knows,
I barely endure his wild impetus,
the hail of blows of sand and stones.
He chases away, disappears from sight.
but earth and I — we remain dizzy;
it seems — a deep winter
takes through the heart of hot July.
