Pages 491-492. Continuation of 'Spinoze' — Section VI: 'Midber' (Desert — Hebrew). Bows to desert. Sand burns through eyes, 'dorn' (thorn) stabs through knees. Came briefly, should stay long. Not 'roye' (worthy — Hebrew 'ra'uy') for 'eybikn shtumen' (eternal muteness) to replace song. Still in 'rshus' (domain — Hebrew 'reshut') of 'glustung un tsiter' (lust and trembling), of eyes, lips, step, 'khoymer' (matter — Hebrew 'chomer'), 'shefa' (abundance — Hebrew), 'hamer un aker un shnit' (hammer, plow, cut). Sees 'egul' (circle — Hebrew 'igul') closing around. Each day like door with 'rigl' (bolt). Head pushed into circle 'vi in a knup fun a shtrik' (like noose of rope). Night rocks 'vi a vigl' (like cradle). Section VII: 'Tung' (action) must be 'nes' (miracle — Hebrew). Through 'moyer un shleser' (wall and locks). Prayer 'farges' (forget) is great — but 'gedenk' (remember) greater. Desert mysticism; memory ethics. Continuation of 'Spinoze': earth loaded with 'kraft un likht' (power and light). 'Geburtn' (births) tear from innards. 'Grezl' (blade of grass) sprouts with 'freyd fun flikht' (joy of duty). Count grasses, count joys. 'Aker' (plow) digs deep. One 'vaserotropn' (water drop) has fullness of drink. One 'oyfgeshmekhlt vort' (smiled-upon word) — fullness of 'baglikung' (happiness). 'Bashtrof' (punished) many times. Own 'inkvizitsye' (inquisition). Sweet punishment for 'eyn borir' (one touch), 'getserlt' (caressed). Wants to be plowed 'fun same ni' (from very beginning). 'Pantser' (armor) fall away. Calls like earth in May. 'Gebentshter flantser' (blessed planter — 'gebentsht' Hebrew/Yiddish). Section VIII: 'Mentsh gegarter' (Girded Man). 'Raytser, gantser' (rider, whole). My 'festung, shuts un pantser' (fortress, shield, armor) — echoes 'Ben-Yishis reyd' (Ben-Jesse's words = David's Psalms, Ps. 18:2). Brings 'ru' (rest). From 'tol fun angstn' (valley of fears — Ps. 23), hand reaches. Psalm-like address to beloved/God.

Desert

To you, desert, I want to bow my watch.

my head is bowed, to me like —

the dry sand burns through my eyes,

the thorn stabs through my knees.

Come to you for a short while,

should have come for long:

I am still not worthy for eternal muteness

to exchange the expected song.

Still all in the domain of lust and trembling

of eyes, of lips, of step,

of matter of things, of abundance and goods,

of hammer and plow and cut.

But I begin to see the whole circle,

that closes together around me,

every day — like a door with its own bolt,

and more locked becomes every door.

My head I push into the great circle

as if into a knot of a rope,

and night comes and rocks me like a cradle,

here and there and back.

VII

Don't you see that action must be miracle,

with heart and head — through wall and through locks:

however great the prayer: forget, —

the prayer: remember — is even greater.

The earth is loaded today with power and light,

births tear from its innards,

every blade of grass sprouts with joy of duty,

today go count all the grasses — all the joys!

When the plow digs into a ridge with deep sink,

and layers throw themselves like limbs in ecstasy:

one water drop carries in itself the fullness of a drink,

one smiled-upon word — the fullness of happiness.

How many times been punished, and how many times

in one's own inquisition tortured;

sweet is the punishment and light the heaviest yoke

for one touch, for one time being caressed.

I want to be plowed again from the very beginning —

oh, fall away from me, stiffened armor! —

I call to you as the earth calls in May,

dig deep in me your gaze, blessed planter.

VIII

Girded Man

Girded man, rider, whole one,

apportioned in my joy; —

— you my fortress, shield and armor — —

I say after Ben-Yishi's words.

You bring me rest from green lanes,

you water me from fresh spring,

you set me back on my strides

when I stumble, when I fall.

When I come to valley of fears,

and death squeezes me; —

also there your hand you reach

and your comfort arrives there.
