Uncle Tom — and Uncle Sam

Page 279. 'Eynikl fun Onkl Tom' conclusion: Onkl Sem (Uncle Sam) is now a 'sportsman' chewing Wrigley gum — American capitalism commodified. The violent ending: the grandson, fed 'grinem sam' (green poison) from the 'vaysn tseber' (white pail), hops with his grandfather's head and organs in hand — revolutionary violence against accommodationism? Then 'Halivud' (Hollywood) — Leivick's bitter critique of American dream-factory. Oranges tearing 'goldene hoyt' (golden skin), darkness building palaces to 'got obiver' (god-whoever — meaningless deity). The speaker sees 'di finger di tsen' (the ten fingers) pulling the sun on strings — Hollywood as puppet-master. References to Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks, 1920s-30s stars. Real labor ('geboygene rukns in fayer fun fratse' — bent backs in toil's fire) is mere 'hintergrunt-farb' (background color) for celebrity. 'Kaktus shtekht dos harts fun shvaygn' — the desert landscape's silent accusation.

English Translation

Uncle Tom — and Uncle Sam

has the reputation of a sportsman,

Wrigley gum he chews.

Grandson of Uncle Tom,

suck yourself full with green poison

from the white pail; —

and — a hop, and another hop,

and in your hand — your grandfather's head

and his lung-and-liver.

Hollywood

Oranges tear off their golden skin,

flowers scream in nocturnal shivers,

and darkness digs and darkness builds

palaces and towers to god-whoever.

I too would want only to see smile and sun,

as everyone thinks they see and are happy:

but I feel everywhere the ten fingers

of the one who pulls the sun on strings.

Of the one who dances with bells and cap

on vaudeville boards in paint and powder —

he thunders like thunder, he rides a lightning bolt

and weeps the weeping of a last clown.

The Hollywood god has corrupted everything

and crisped the land with empty words:

he stands and sways, he stands and knocks

with dead palms over Mary Pickford.

And real garden, and fruit tree and sheaf,

bent backs in the fire of toil —

all this is nothing more than background color —

a decoration for Douglas Fairbanks.

Palaces carouse. Lord Wellbeing rises,

and winds break laden branches,

on mountains lies snow, and desert is silent,

and cactus stings the heart of silence.
