Page 245. 'Lider fun Umkum' poem 'Erd' (Earth) conclusion. The sunken body receives the call of earth and stone: 'Stay lying, like a seed sown. Be born anew, let your cradle be your nest.' The earth commands: 'Sow yourself and grow with stone and grass and blossom, until the cutting-wheel's axle announces: cut.' (The harvest.) 'Blessed is the branch, the first to fall under the wheel — reveals in revealed song the cutting-knife's secret.' The first to fall is blessed — echoes of martyrological tradition. Even fly and mosquito 'dance hopefully in the night's round-dance' (karahod — a Slavic circle dance) 'in the coming of new grace.' Renewal through burial, the body as seed. The insects who bit the flesh now dance in celebration.

Sunken body. —
Instead of its wandering softness
it receives the summoned call
of earth and of stone:
— 'Stay lying, and lie
like a seed sown,
be born anew, and let your cradle
be your nest.
Sow yourself and grow
with stone and with grass and with blossom,
until from the cutting-wheel the axle
will announce: cut.
Blessed is the branch
the first to fall under the wheel,
reveals in revealed song
the cutting-knife's secret.'
With giant steps,
in the coming of new grace,
hopefully dance fly and mosquito
in the night's round-dance.
