Page 28. 'Vayt tsu di volkns' concludes with the poet drifting into sleep, chasing himself and the world into clouds. 'In der tifenish fun nakht' (In the Depths of Night) is an existentialist masterpiece: a hand moves in darkness toward an unknown; the speaker is a 'symbol of the world,' as old as life itself; wanting to flee from self but growing ever larger, inescapable. 'Biz vanen' (Until When) asks how long until joy will be born — until then, the soul wraps itself in shame and helplessness.

English Translation

Soon now it will entirely begin to dawn.

I will somehow bear my slumber through.

I will somehow bear my slumber through,

rock myself in some abandoned corner.

Rock myself in some abandoned corner

into myself and the world into the clouds chase away.

In the Depths of Night

In the depths of night my hand makes a movement,

no one knows whom I see, whom I seek in the night.

I opened my eyes and closed them again,

and lost became a movement of my hand.

I myself don't know whom and what I seek in the night,

and to whom was meant the movement of my hand.

In the depths of night I am lonely and alone,

of the entire world a symbol in the night is my figure,

and as old as life is, I too am that old.

I want to run, to hide from the world — from myself —

but ever greater, ever greater in the darkness grows my figure,

and nowhere to run from the world — from myself.

Until When

Until the moment comes

years will pass.

Until my joyful lightness

will be born.

Until then I will be lonely and strange,

deep and hidden

from myself and from people in the mist

of distant figures.

And be like a child helpless,

ashamed and without will,

sometimes — in contempt, sometimes in forgiveness

wrapping my soul.
