The neighbor spoke of 'Haynes un Spinozes toyt' (Heine's and Spinoza's deaths) - both died from chronic illness. Heinrich Heine spent 8 years in his 'Matratzengruft' (mattress-grave). Spinoza died of consumption while grinding lenses. 'Dovid Edelshtat' = David Edelstadt (1866-1892), Yiddish anarchist poet who died of TB in Denver. 'Zkhiye' = privilege/merit (Hebrew). 'Heze' = audacity (Hebrew). Nathan's humble irony at comparing himself to Spinoza and Heine.

the light moves, dances and jumps inflamed:
and see: it's only a veined man's hand!
A man's hand -- perhaps the hand of the neighbor
from over the wall, -- the Jewish poet? --
but how did a hand crawl through
the wall, and here it already reaches his bed? -- --
-- a strange person the neighbor -- doesn't want to lie.
he flings himself around as in a cell:
he carries in himself a reincarnation of a melody
and seeks a rectification on a bloody threshold: -- --
The neighbor, visiting him yesterday,
spoke of Heine's and Spinoza's deaths:
does his hand now come to weave together
the death of all into one wonderment? --
Oh, it was good for him to learn
that Heine lay bedridden eight years,
and strongly fought not to close his eyes,
until finally he closed them.
And even more good it was for him to hear
that also Spinoza lay sick,
and accomplished that death itself should become
a love-radiation of God's thought.
And see -- such a kind of wonderful trembling:
in Denver lies after all David Edelstadt! --
to be a third to Heine and Spinoza
who has ever had such a privilege?
He smiles up again. -- such a kind of audacity,
(he gives thereby a jolt to the edge of the bed)
to compare oneself to the godlike Spinoza,
to Heine the romantic poet!
