Page 136. 'Over the Sleeping Eyes' (Iber di Shlоfndike Oygn): A disturbing poem of insomnia and self-accusation. Over the sleeping eyes of all strangers, the speaker's hand covers his own eyes — fiery rings roll, and his eyes never tire of watching themselves. He envies the calm of sleeping people, their rhythmic breath, their faithfulness to measured hours — while above them shattered thunders crash without order: devastation, death, exile. He admits: perhaps he himself has provoked this chaos upon everyone's heads. When a shadow of calm comes, a tired voice whispers: Enough. Don't provoke me on yourself anymore. Take your hand from your eyes, extinguish the fiery rings. The lust for unrest is in you; chaos and death and exile — is you, you alone. See, people sleep. A searing self-indictment: the speaker is the source of catastrophe, unable to rest.

English Translation

Over the Sleeping Eyes

Over the sleeping eyes of all people —

strangers in strange houses —

carries through the touch of my hand,

of my hand that covers my own eyes —

glowing fiery rings

roll in a spin

and my eyes do not tire

of looking at themselves.

See, people lie in houses and sleep.

I envy the calm of all people:

the rhythmic breath that beats from their hearts,

the idyllic faithfulness to themselves

of the measured punctual hours —

when above over their heads,

without order and without reckoning,

in whistling and in wailing,

shattered thunders crash —

devastation and death and exile.

See, people lie in houses and sleep.

Let it be that I have sent, provoked

the whistling and crashing,

the devastation and exile — the chaos —

upon my head and everyone's.

Sometimes, when a shadow of calm

spreads also over me —

I hear a whisper of a tired, troubled voice:

— Enough, no more.

Don't provoke me anymore on yourself,

on yourself and on you.

Take down your own hand from your eyes

and extinguish all the fiery rings.

The lust for unrest — is in you,

chaos and death and exile — is you,

you — you — alone.

See, people lie in houses and sleep.
