roll and tear themselves apart cramps of hunger.
In the second room, a few steps down,
on a groaning-collapsed bed,
under a flowered quilt,
lies the long, thin dimwit Bishop
and demands love from the goitered Mrs. Bishop.
The moon hangs exactly opposite the little window,
so white, so tasty, like the bread with butter
that the little boy Daniel ate at Monday-time.
— Let me taste you, moon,
make me full, moon, make me full.
The bastard Alfred already knows through signs
and senses beforehand what will end
the commotion below of Daddy and Ma:
whether with nostril-snoring, or with a kick in the belly,
with cursing-muttering and with steps toward him —
with robber steps toward him, toward the bastard.
— Let Mama not be stubborn, moon,
let Mama not be stubborn.
The yellow darkness suddenly radiated through,
broke through the little window, crept in,
took Alfred along and swam out,
and carried itself with him to Daniel
laid him in bed and covered him up.
Daddy Bishop caresses the goiter of Mrs. Bishop,
caresses and kisses with his mournful lips,
and she, Mrs. Bishop, lies cold as a mat:
suddenly he springs up and a blow to the goiter —
