Page 401. New poem 'Fun der vayt' (From the Distance): addressed to 'mayn shvester' (my sister). From field and forest 'derher mayn ruf' (hear my call) — 'heyb mikh oyf fun klem fun has un lester' (lift me from squeeze of hate and slander). Opens heart for 'viduidike verter' (confessional words — Hebrew 'vidui'). A person rises, is 'emetsns basherte' (someone's destined one). Whether 'oysderveyt' (chosen) or dreamed to melt — 'dos glik hengt... oyf a hor' (happiness hangs on a hair). In light grows 'a riz' (a giant). Existential affirmation: 'er iz geven? vet zayn? — er iz!' (was he? will be? — he IS!). 'S'iz halber tog' (it's half day). The person says 'zay mayner' (be mine) — response 'bin dayner' (I'm yours), joy 'tantst fun tson oyf tson' (dances tooth to tooth). But suddenly 'mentshn-riz' (giant-person) becomes 'a shotn' (shadow), and echoes 'farbotn' (forbidden). Storm-wind plucks fields, sun descends, what binds 'vert opgebundn' (becomes unbound). Wants 'yesh' (existence — Hebrew) secure as stone or thorns, but all passes 'in ovntikn vikher' (in evening's gust).

English Translation

From the Distance

From field and forest hear my call:

it's beginning, so, my sister,

stretch out your hand and lift me up

from squeeze of hate and slander.

I open up my heart again

for confessional words:

a person rises — passes in happiness,

is someone's destined one.

Whether he is chosen, or only

dreamed to melt away —

happiness hangs anyway on a hair,

that anyone can tear.

A person in light grows — a giant

and strides ever firmer:

was he? will he be? — he IS!

It's half day, my sister.

The person approaches, touches me

with two words: be mine!

and my joy dances tooth to tooth —

I'm yours, yours, yours.

I follow him, and suddenly

the giant-person becomes a shadow

and across the expanse of all the earth

echoes one word: forbidden.

The fields are plucked by a storm-wind.

The sun goes down, down,

and that which binds me to all

is unbound again.

I want my existence no more than stone,

like thorns at least be certain,

but all begins to go, disperse, pass away

in evening's gust.
