Page 465. Continuation of 'Ofene himlen': 'feld geven, ovnt geven' (field was, evening was). 'Du... geven... bist... zolst eybik zayn' (you... was... are... shall be forever). New poem 'Oyfn tishl shloft a gloz' (On the Little Table Sleeps a Glass): 'shoybn fartsogn toyik' (windowpanes covered with dew). 'Hoz' (rabbit) plays on wall — perhaps shadow. 'Tishl' (little table — Slavic diminutive) by bed. Paper, pen, 'alter lider-band' (old book of songs). He stretches, reaches out 'loytere hant' (pure hand). Writes to 'eybiker fraynt' (eternal friend) — 'dos letste vort' (the last word). Puts off writing more. Pure fingers hang. Head falls. 'Zeygerl' (little clock) ticks. Clock on 'fentster' (window), reflects sun, smallest hand 'yogt iber zikh aleyn' (chases after itself). Death-bed scene; passing of sanatorium patient; last message to friend.

On the Little Table Sleeps a Glass
The windowpanes covered with dew,
on the wall a rabbit plays,
the little table by the bed stands quiet,
on the table stands a glass.
Next to the glass — paper, a pen,
an old book of songs;
and he, who on the bed stretches himself,
reaches out a pure hand.
He takes the paper and marks:
my distant, my eternal friend,
through you will reach everyone
my last word: — today — —
Then he wants to write something more,
and puts it off for later,
the pure fingers remain
hanging down over the table.
The head wants to catch the fingers,
and falls to one side cheek; —
only now one hears a striking —
a little clock's striking tick-tock.
The little clock lies on the window,
and reflects the sun in itself,
three little hands, — one — the smallest,
chases after itself in a gallop.
