Cling-Clang
Work 26 of 440
Page 34. 'Kling-klang' is a macabre dance poem — the prisoner dances with his chains while eating black bread, drinking tea, pulling out gray hairs (for each one pulled, another grows). A hidden figure drums him on: Higher! Higher! — a dance of defiant madness. 'In hoyf iz a shturem' (In the Yard Is a Storm): during the storm, the prisoner sees his own ghostly reflection — deathly pale eyes, hands like lead wings.

Cling-Clang
Cling-clang, I dance for myself
with the chains on my feet:
with black bread in hand,
I give a dance and take a bite.
With the mug of tea in hand,
I give a dance and take a drink:
guard to and guard away —
I understand him at a wink.
He never sees how I dance —
a thousand eyes are watching still:
heads upon heads and hands a forest,
hands calling: „quick and more".
There from under the bed crawls
a hidden one out,
beats the bars, cymbals, drums —
— Higher! Higher! he cries out.
Higher, higher I dance for myself,
years I must sit here:
I tear out a gray hair —
a second gray grows back.
I tear out two and I tear out three
and a dance after each tear,
do a dance and do a clang
with the chains on my feet.
In the Yard Is a Storm
In the yard is a storm, the lamps extinguished,
the guard sits somewhere hidden.
I'm afraid to look in the window, there tease
me faces — figures.
I'm afraid to look in the window, there I see
a face as in a mirror:
two eyes poured with deathly pallor,
and hands like two leaden wings.
