Page 453. New poem 'Zay gebentsht' (Be Blessed): face 'ful mit geveyn' (full of weeping) passes into 'loytererer simkhe' (purer joy — Hebrew 'simcha'). Body weak, becomes 'riz — a gibor' (giant, hero — Hebrew 'gibbor'). Hand rises 'in brokhe' (in blessing — Hebrew 'bracha'). 'Zay gebentsht, zay geheylikt' (be blessed, be sanctified). Stood at 'kevers rand' (grave's edge — Hebrew 'kever'), covered 'oron' (coffin — Hebrew 'aron'). Grave's 'zamd' (sand) precious because you stepped on it. New poem 'Shteyner — mayne brider' (Stones — My Brothers): stones as brothers, press close. Body lies in 'ovnt-feld' (evening-field). Blesses 'tife shnitn' (deep cuts), ready for more. Masochistic mysticism; union with earth and stone.

English Translation

Be Blessed

Your face — full of weeping —

passes into purer joy,

your body — weak and small —

grows into a giant — a hero.

Your hand, the tired one in farewell,

rises again in blessing;

be blessed, be sanctified, sigh

of love, of death and songs.

You stood at the grave's edge,

covered a coffin with a shovel, —

precious to me now is the grave's sand,

because your foot stepped on it.

As I once fell to your feet,

I fall to touch the sand now.

I want the might of a giant

also in my body to feel.

I lift a heap of earth

with felt strength of a hero,

every grain of sand becomes alive,

and begins to grow and grows over me.

Stones — My Brothers

Stones — my brothers, —

press closer to me;

through the depths of my limbs

cut through with your touch.

In the middle of the evening-field

my body lies spread out, —

I bless the deep cuts

and am ready for still more.
