Work 173 of 440

Page 214. 'Di Shtal' Section LAMED-BET continued — the song of the slaughter knives (khalofim): The knives sing from their own perspective: 'Who forges us? Who sharpens us? Who mirrors himself in our two-sidedness?' They are 'the princes, the lineage of all weapons, hidden in sheaths of black enchanted velvet.' They 'shine, gleam, rest and dream in proud, stiffened blue, as befits nobles — thin, cold, clever, lonely quiet nobles.' The personified knives ask: 'Who touches us? Who strokes us? Who breathes upon us with wonder?' On the smooth-stone they are polished. Fires approach and recede; 'flickering pieces of heavens fall upon our gleaming edge, are cut into milli-millions of hidden thinnesses upon our dreaming edge.' The perverse aestheticization of the murder weapon — the same ritual khalofim used for kosher slaughter now turned to human victims. The blue steel dreams of its purpose.

שײַנען מיר, לײַכטן מיר;

English Translation

And this is the song of the slaughter knives:

Who forges us?

Who sharpens us?

Who mirrors himself in our two-sidedness?

Sharpen thin

sharpen thin

on the sharpening stone.

We are the princes, the lineage

of all weapons,

hidden from everyone's eyes in sheaths of velvet,

in black enchanted velvet —

we shine, we gleam;

rest and dream

rest and dream

in proud, stiffened blue,

blue, as befits nobles —

for thin ones,

for cold ones

for clever ones,

for lonely quiet nobles.

Who touches us?

Who strokes us?

Who breathes upon us with wonder? —

Stroke-smooth,

stroke-smooth

on the smooth-stone.

Fires-conflagrations approach,

approach, recede —

fall flickering pieces of heavens

upon our gleaming edge:

are cut into milli-millions of hidden thinnesses

upon our dreaming edge. —
